The Analogue 3D shipped on November 18, 2025, carrying the promise that has become an Analogue house style: buy the hardware now, and it will get better on somebody else's schedule. Nine months later, that promise has cashed out to the tune of twelve firmware builds, culminating in version 1.5.0 — a release that teaches a 1996 console to upscale its own graphics without ever touching a modern GPU. That is either a genuine engineering flex or a very expensive way to relitigate the entire FPGA-versus-emulation argument, depending on how much you enjoy watching N64 developers fight on the internet.

We pulled every firmware entry from Analogue's support archive, cross-checked the published MD5 checksums, and read the changelogs so you don't have to. What follows is what actually changed between the day-one build and the current 22.3 MB release: the save states, the screenshots, the flash-cart fixes, the overclock nobody advertises, and the one feature the console still doesn't have — and won't.

Firmware 1.5.0: N64 Upscaling, No GPU Required

Released July 21, 2026, firmware 1.5.0 (MD5 a00db9c90a2d8f09f25ec7f2d47c1802, 22.3 MB) is the largest and most consequential update the Analogue 3D has received. Its headline feature is something Analogue calls Internal Graphical Upscaling, and for once the marketing copy is technically defensible.

What Internal Graphical Upscaling actually does

Analogue's changelog describes it plainly: "Resolution is doubled horizontally for twice as many pixels onscreen without affecting 2D graphics." The key word is internal. This is not a sharpening filter bolted onto the HDMI output, and it is not a host GPU guessing at missing pixels the way a software scaler would. The upscaling happens inside the RDP (Reality Display Processor) and VI (Video Interface) pipeline, reconstructing the console's native output before it is resampled for a 4K panel. You enable it under Settings > Advanced > Horizontal Upscaling, and it is designed to work alongside the Original Display Modes — Analogue's bit-perfect CRT recreations — rather than fighting them. Polygon edges get cleaner, distant geometry gets more defined, and the picture stops looking soft, all without disturbing the 2D HUD elements that N64 games layered on top.

The rest of the 1.5.0 changelog

Upscaling grabbed the headlines, but 1.5.0 is a dense release. It adds Quick Loading (near-instant loading of a saved Memory), a new "Recent Memory" Startup Action, and Gallery captures sourced from the new rendering pipeline. On the accuracy front it lists "Full RSP scalar/vector interlock behavior implementation" and "Complete RSP branch and dual instruction behavior implementation," plus a progressive-scan jitter fix. Controller support was reworked too: the 8BitDo N64 Modkit finally handles simultaneous C-button presses (with Modkit firmware 1.04 or newer) and USB rumble is restored. Analogue also moved the overclock and advanced settings into a dedicated Advanced menu, retuned the Integer+ scaling defaults, and made the in-game menu opacity dynamic.

The caveat: nobody outside Analogue has benchmarked it

Here is the deadpan asterisk. Notebookcheck's Andreas Sebayang called the upscaler "likely the most significant change" in the update, but noted the coverage "relies primarily on Analogue's general claims rather than independent testing" (Notebookcheck, July 23, 2026). An upscaler that reconstructs geometry before resampling and promises zero timing cost is exactly the kind of claim that deserves a frame-capture rig and a logic analyzer. As of mid-August 2026, nobody has published one. Time Extension called it "A Game Changer"; The Machine calls it a very promising claim awaiting a control group.

Twelve Builds in Eight Months

Twelve firmware releases between November 18, 2025 and July 21, 2026 works out to roughly one every three weeks. That is not a company patching a broken launch; it is a company that shipped a deliberately unfinished software stack on finished hardware and has been filling it in ever since. Here is the entire archive, checksums and all.

The launch window: 1.1.0 and 1.1.9

Version 1.1.0 was the day-one shipping firmware. The first public post-launch build, 1.1.9 (November 28, 2025, MD5 3c9ced8c09fc2f01e42de82d5d556115), arrived ten days later and set the tone: it added manual region selection to the configure menu, a Disable Texture Filtering toggle, refined the Unleashed overclock behavior for CPU-bound games, and improved SD connect mode. In other words, the very first update was already touching the two most contentious features on the box — overclocking and image processing.

The winter cadence: the 1.2.x line

Six builds landed between January 30 and April 24, 2026. Firmware 1.2.0 was the big one: Force Progressive Output, support for the Nintendo Switch Online N64 controller, HDMI fixes, an alert for 8BitDo pads running old firmware, and a Library that now tracked both game-added date and total playtime. It also force-disabled the Expansion Pak for the USA release of Space Station Silicon Valley to dodge a game-breaking bug — the kind of per-title surgery you only get from a maintained platform. Then came the fixes: 1.2.1 killed a bug where playtime could exceed 24 hours; 1.2.2 introduced Startup Action and a Power Off menu option; 1.2.3 fixed GameShark compatibility, cartridge detection, and HDR brightness; 1.2.4 rebuilt Library detection; 1.2.5 added Advanced HDR and ALLM at 1080p; 1.2.6 shipped nine cartridge colors and a progressive-output flicker fix for Resident Evil 2.

The feature era: 1.3.0 to 1.5.0

Once the bugs were mostly drained, the marquee features arrived: save states in 1.3.0 (May 15), screenshots and a gallery in 1.4.0 (June 23), and internal upscaling in 1.5.0 (July 21). Every one of these was a free download.

The Updates That Matter

Twelve builds is a lot of changelog. Three additions moved the product further than the rest combined.

Save states, rebranded as "Memories" (1.3.0)

Firmware 1.3.0 (MD5 a24cc15d8a874872cc0773cbc1bdbbd3) added save states, which Analogue insists on calling "Memories" both on its support page and in the Wikipedia firmware chronology. The implementation is generous: up to 20 states per game, with the oldest automatically deleted and pinned states preserved. This is the single biggest quality-of-life leap the platform has made. Remember the lore — the N64 was the console of password systems and battery-backed carts that died, of Controller Paks that held a laughable number of pages. A Nintendo purist will tell you save states are cheating. Everyone who ever lost a Rare Achievement to a power cut will tell that purist to be quiet.

Screenshots, the Gallery, and the WiFi that isn't there (1.4.0)

Version 1.4.0 (MD5 b7cfc37a0b1d4c92698cd57990868f90) added screenshots and a Gallery, which Analogue describes as "definitive recreations of original CRT displays, now captured for the first time in bit-perfect 4K HDR." The capture hotkeys differ by pad: Star on the 8BitDo 64, the dedicated Capture button on an NSO controller, and Z+Start+R on an original pad. The obvious problem drew the obvious complaint. MMORPG.com's Joseph Bradford wrote, "I do wish that the A3D had a WiFi feature so I could simply upload the screenshots direct from the console" (MMORPG.com). A console that captures 4K HDR stills and then makes you sneakernet them off a microSD card is peak 2026 retro: the picture is from the future, the workflow is from 2004.

The flash-cart fix nobody advertised (1.2.4)

The least glamorous update might be the most quietly important. Firmware 1.2.4 introduced Advanced Library detection, which tracks each ROM header on a flash cartridge — an EverDrive 64 X7, say — as its own Library entry, with independent saves, rumble settings, and Controller Pak data. Before 1.2.4, cycling through dozens of ROMs on a single cart confused the Library into treating them as one game. Notebookcheck flagged the fix as solving a real flash-cart headache. For anyone running their whole library off one cart — which is most enthusiasts — this was the update that made the machine usable as intended.

The Overclock in Every Boot

Here is the feature Analogue would rather you not think too hard about: the Analogue 3D overclocks your N64 games by default, and it has since day one.

Four tiers, and Auto is the default

Per Engadget's review, the console ships with four overclock tiers — Auto, Enhanced, Enhanced+, and Unleashed — and it boots at Auto out of the box. The Unleashed mode is reportedly capable of up to 50% faster RCP throughput and 33% faster CPU cycles. Both 1.1.9 and 1.2.6 shipped explicit tweaks to overclock behavior, so this is not a static gimmick; it is a maintained subsystem.

Perfect Dark, GoldenEye, and the CPU-bound problem

The N64's dirty secret was that many of its most beloved games ran badly on it. Rare's engine — the one behind GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark — routinely dropped into the low teens or single digits during firefights, bottlenecked on the CPU and the Reality Coprocessor. Overclock modes target exactly these CPU-bound titles, and the Unleashed tier is where a game like Perfect Dark stops feeling like a slideshow. This is the strongest argument for the feature: it fixes a hardware limitation that was never a design choice, just a compromise.

The purist objection

And yet. Overclocking is, by definition, not how the silicon behaved in 1996. A company whose entire pitch is fidelity ships a fidelity-breaking feature enabled by default, and most owners will never open the menu to learn it is on. You can absolutely turn it off. The question is whether a hardware-accuracy brand should make you.

The Cycle-Accuracy Fight

No account of the Analogue 3D's firmware era is honest without the argument that has shadowed it since December 2025.

Kaze Emanuar's numbers

Kaze Emanuar — the N64 homebrew developer famous for wringing impossible performance out of the Super Mario 64 engine — put the console through a test suite and was blunt. Via Notebookcheck, he said, "This thing is nowhere near cycle accurate," measuring CPU timing roughly 6% slower and the RSP (Reality Signal Processor) about 30% slower than real silicon, plus a RAM discrepancy relative to a fully expanded console (Notebookcheck, December 22, 2025). His follow-up figures put overall input lag around 5% higher and games like Diddy Kong Racing running roughly 4% slower on frames.

What Analogue actually claims

The important distinction, and one both fans and critics muddle: FPGA does not automatically mean cycle-accurate. FPGA means the logic is implemented in reconfigurable gates rather than emulated in software — a fundamentally different and generally more faithful approach — but the accuracy of that implementation still depends on how well the designers modeled the original timing. Analogue's marketing leans on "no emulation" and hardware fidelity; it has been careful not to plaster "cycle-accurate" across the box. At launch, the RSP timing was demonstrably off. Kaze was right.

Why the firmware log is the real rebuttal

And this is the payoff of a maintained FPGA platform. Read the changelogs again: 1.2.3 addressed RSP dual-instruction interlocks and VI timing; 1.4.0 corrected I-cache and D-cache opcode behavior and a floating-point rounding regression; 1.5.0 shipped full RSP scalar/vector interlock and branch behavior. Kaze's December critique did not kill the product — it aged into a to-do list that Analogue has been quietly checking off, one timing fix at a time. A software emulator gets patched the same way, but an FPGA correcting its own gate-level timing over eight months of free updates is a genuinely different proposition. The gap is narrowing in public.

Hardware, and the Price the Rumors Got Wrong

Before the corrections pile up online, let's fix the two numbers people keep getting wrong: the chip and the cost.

Cyclone 10 GX and roughly 220,000 logic elements

The Analogue 3D is built on an Intel Cyclone 10 GX FPGA with approximately 220,000 logic elements — a considerably larger fabric than the DE10-Nano's Cyclone V that powers the MiSTer ecosystem, which is why the 3D can drive a full N64 core plus 4K output. Video goes out over HDMI 2.1 at up to 4K with HDR and VRR, and the Original Display Modes reconstruct CRT scanline and mask behavior in that same pipeline.

From 2023 announcement to 2025 shelves

Analogue announced the 3D on October 16, 2023, then did what Analogue does: it slipped. The ship window moved from Q1 2025 to July 2025 to late August 2025 to Q4 2025 before the console finally landed on November 18, 2025. Two years, announcement to hand. If you have bought an Analogue product before, none of this surprised you.

The price the research keeps getting wrong: $249.99

The console's MSRP is $249.99, full stop. The November 24, 2025 restock nudged to $269.99, which Engadget attributed to tariffs. The $399.99 figure that circulates is simply wrong, and the $39.99 number floating alongside it is the 8BitDo 64 wireless controller — sold separately — not the console and not a flash cart. An EverDrive 64 X7 is a third-party Krikzz product that runs roughly $175 to $215. A 16 GB microSD comes preinstalled. Limited colorways, including an Atomic Purple, are real.

What the Critics Said

The launch reviews were strong, and the firmware cadence has only strengthened the case. The verdicts break cleanly into praise, one persistent reservation, and a developer who refuses to be impressed.

The praise

IGN's Seth G. Macy gave it 8/10, calling it "the best possible way to play your N64 library outside of the original hardware hooked up to a CRT." Wired's Matt Kamen went 9/10, as did Time Extension. GamesRadar+ said it "sets a new bar for retro console remakes." Gizmodo framed it as "the console your N64 games deserve," and Digital Foundry called it "the most impressive Analogue 'FPGA' console yet." That is about as close to consensus as hardware reviews get.

The reservation

Engadget's Tim Stevens supplied the one line every skeptic should tattoo on the box: "Your Nintendo 64 games never looked so good, but Analogue's greatest system yet can't fix some of the N64's inherent flaws" (Engadget). No FPGA retroactively adds polygons, sharpens 1996 textures, or lifts the fog that hid the draw distance. The flaws Stevens means are in the library, not the box — even as Nintendo mines the same era, teasing an Ocarina of Time remake in the June 2026 Direct with no release date attached.

The consensus

Near-universal 8-to-9 out of 10. The critique is never the hardware; it is the price-to-value math against emulation and the honest fact that the N64 catalog is more nostalgic than timeless. The 3D makes that catalog look and run better than it ever has. It cannot make Superman 64 good.

FPGA vs Emulation vs Silicon

The 3D does not exist in a vacuum. There are three other ways to play N64 games in 2026, and each exposes a different trade-off.

The FPGA route: MiSTer

The purist alternative is a MiSTer setup running an N64 core. It is the same gate-level philosophy, but it is a project, not a product: you need the DE10-Nano, SDRAM, and the patience to configure one of the most demanding cores in the whole ecosystem. If you want to understand the ceiling on that approach, the MiSTer Multisystem 2 at £216 for a £290 chip tells the whole DIY-FPGA story. The Analogue 3D is turnkey; MiSTer is a hobby.

Software emulation

The cheapest path is emulation on hardware you likely already own. A PC running RetroArch's N64 cores, a living-room box running a Batocera build, a RetroPie install, or a handheld like the Retroid Pocket 6 will all play N64 games for a fraction of $249.99 — or free. The difference is philosophical and practical: emulation approximates the machine in software and lives or dies on the accuracy of that approximation, whereas an FPGA replicates the logic. For most players most of the time, a good mupen64plus or ParaLLEl setup is indistinguishable from the 3D. For the last few percent of fidelity — and for a plug-and-play 4K HDR experience with zero configuration — the 3D earns its price.

Real hardware plus a flash cart

The uncompromising path is an original N64, RGB-modded, with an EverDrive 64 X7 and an external scaler like a RetroTINK or OSSC. It is the most authentic option and, once you total the mod, the cart, and the scaler, comfortably more expensive and fiddlier than a $249.99 box that outputs 4K HDR natively.

Installing the Firmware

Updating is deliberately low-tech: no account, no launcher, no cloud. Just a microSD card and a few minutes of patience.

The SD-card method

Download the build you want from analogue.co/support/3d/firmware, copy the single .bin file to the root of the console's microSD card, insert it, and power on. The console flashes automatically. A yellow power LED and blinking controller LEDs mean the update is in progress; it takes roughly three to six minutes and reboots itself when done. Do not cut power while it is flashing.

USB-C recovery mode

If the SD method stalls, the console has a USB-C connect mode: hold the reset and power buttons together until the LED turns green, then flash over the cable. It is the fallback, not the default.

Verifying the checksum

Analogue publishes an MD5 for every build — 1.2.3 was 0ed9d8906f7cf68a740e424ef5598a41, 1.5.0 is a00db9c90a2d8f09f25ec7f2d47c1802. Checking the hash before you flash costs one command and saves you from a corrupted download bricking a $249.99 box. Do it.

Five Predictions for the Next Twelve Months

The firmware log is a roadmap if you read it right. Here is where The Machine expects the next twelve months to go.

Accuracy: the Kaze checklist gets shorter

Prediction 1: expect at least one or two more accuracy-focused point releases — call it 1.5.x or 1.6.0 — before the end of 2026, specifically narrowing the remaining RSP timing delta that Kaze Emanuar flagged. The cadence of twelve builds in eight months does not just stop. Prediction 2: per-game compatibility patches will keep landing quietly, in the mold of the Space Station Silicon Valley Expansion Pak fix and the San Francisco Rush Controller Pak corrections, as the community reports edge cases.

The upscaler gets its independent test

Prediction 3: someone with capture hardware — Digital Foundry is the obvious candidate — will publish a frame-level analysis of the 1.5.0 upscaler by Q4 2026. The verdict will be broadly positive, validating Analogue's "no timing hit" claim, but with documented edge cases around 2D/HUD elements and specific problem titles. The marketing survives contact with a logic analyzer, mostly.

What won't happen

Prediction 4: WiFi is not coming to this hardware. There is no radio in the current board, so Joseph Bradford's screenshot-upload wish stays unfulfilled on the 3D — direct cloud upload is a next-hardware feature, not a firmware unlock. Prediction 5: no surprise second system. The Analogue 3D is an N64 machine and will remain one; Analogue's multi-format ambitions live in other products, not a shock core drop that suddenly plays another console. Bet against both at your peril.

The Bottom Line

Eight months, twelve builds, zero paid upgrades. That is the story.

Who this is for

If you already own one, the console you bought in November is a materially better machine today: save states, 4K HDR screenshots, internal upscaling, an overclock that fixes framerates the original hardware never hit, and dozens of accuracy and compatibility fixes — all free. This is the Analogue model working exactly as advertised, which does not always happen.

Who should wait

If you have a capable PC and a RetroArch install, the 3D is a $249.99 purchase for convenience and the last few percent of fidelity, not a necessity. The N64 library has not gotten more fun in 2026; it has gotten sharper. Decide which of those you are actually paying for.

The Machine's bottom line

Analogue promised the hardware would age well, and for once the firmware log backs the marketing. Twelve builds, one genuinely novel upscaler, and an open argument with a homebrew legend that the company is winning one timing fix at a time. The Analogue 3D in August 2026 is a better console than the one that shipped — which is precisely the sentence Analogue wants you to read, and, annoyingly, it is true.
