There is a version of this comparison that writes itself in ninety seconds, and Retroid’s own store page has already written it: the Pocket 6 is newer, faster and brighter than the Pocket 5, for thirty dollars more. Buy the 6. Close the tab. The problem is that nearly every number in that sentence is stale, rounded in the manufacturer’s favour, or quietly wrong — and the figure everyone repeats, “about 40% faster,” undersells the real gap by almost half.

So let’s do it properly. Two Android emulation handhelds from the same company, thirteen months apart, sharing a screen size and a silhouette and almost nothing else. One is a 2024 flagship living on borrowed time; the other is a 2025 flagship that spent its first four months getting more expensive while the planet’s RAM supply was strip-mined for AI datacentres. I’ve had both on the desk running the same ROMs off the same microSD card. Here is what the delta actually is, where the spec sheets lie, and which one your money should go to in July 2026.

The $35 Gap Nobody Quotes Right

What each device actually is

The Retroid Pocket 5 shipped in September 2024 at $199. It is built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 — the SM8250 “Kona,” a 7nm part that headlined Android flagships back in 2020 — paired with an Adreno 650, 8GB of LPDDR4x, 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, and a 5.5-inch 1080p OLED running at a flat 60Hz. A 5,000mAh battery, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, 280 grams, Android 13. For a device whose job is to emulate everything up to and including the sixth console generation, that was — and mostly still is — plenty. Where these two sit in Retroid’s wider catalogue, we ranked all five current Pocket models separately; this piece is about the two that share a face.

The Retroid Pocket 6 went up for pre-order on October 27, 2025 and reached wide retail in early 2026. Same 5.5-inch panel size, but now a 1920×1080 AMOLED at 120Hz. Underneath: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (SM8550 “Kalama,” a 4nm N4P part with a Cortex-X3 prime core at 3.2GHz and an Adreno 740), 8 or 12GB of the faster LPDDR5X, a 6,000mAh battery with 27W charging, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, and an actual cooling fan. It weighs around 304–320 grams and — this matters — runs Android 13, exactly like the 5. Flag that now, because half the comparison sites on the internet will tell you the Pocket 6 runs Android 15. It does not. That’s the G2, a different device entirely.

The RAMpocalypse reshuffle

Here is where the tidy “thirty dollars more” story falls apart. Both prices moved, in opposite directions, for the same reason. Through 2026 the price of LPDDR5X spiked as fabs redirected capacity toward the high-bandwidth memory that AI accelerators eat by the ton — the retro-handheld corner of the internet took to calling it the RAMpocalypse, and it was not a joke to the people setting these prices. On March 2, 2026, Retroid raised the 8GB Pocket 6 from $229 to $244 and discontinued the 12GB/256GB model outright. Android Authority’s Andy Walker got the statement: Retroid said the “recent surge in memory pricing has reached a level that we are unfortunately unable to absorb.” Steam Deck HQ’s Shawn Wilkins put it more broadly — “the increasingly difficult RAM shortage continues to impact hardware companies across the industry.”

Then the Pocket 5 moved too, but the other way — up in value. On July 9 Retroid announced that after July 14, 2026 the Pocket 5’s base configuration would become 12GB/128GB, with a $10 bump to $209; buyers with unshipped 8GB orders got the extra RAM free. Engadget covered it; the reasoning was, again, the memory market. So the number you actually care about, today, is not $30. It is the distance between a $209 twelve-gigabyte Pocket 5 and a $244 eight-gigabyte Pocket 6: thirty-five dollars — and the cheaper device now has more RAM. Hold that thought. It complicates the verdict in a genuinely interesting way.

How I ran this comparison

Same 512GB microSD card, moved between the two. Same core versions in the same frontends — RetroArch for everything up to PS1 and Saturn, standalone Dolphin for GameCube and Wii, the maintained AetherSX2 forks for PS2, the usual suspects for the odd ducks. Same games, same save states, brightness matched where I could match it. I am not going to pretend a handheld review is a controlled laboratory; it isn’t. But the point of running identical software on both is to isolate the one variable that matters, which is the silicon — and to check the manufacturer’s homework on the one claim, performance, that sells the more expensive box.

Where the spec sites are wrong

Four errors circulate widely enough to be worth killing individually. First: the Pocket 5’s memory is LPDDR4x, not LPDDR5 — vendor listings agree, and it matters, because memory bandwidth is exactly where the older Snapdragon shows its age under a PS2 emulator. Second: the Pocket 6 runs Android 13, not Android 15; the Android-15 device in Retroid’s line is the Pocket G2, and the two get conflated constantly. Third: the Pocket 5 does output video — DisplayPort over USB-C, typically 4K30 handheld and 4K60 through Retroid’s official dock. Some comparison pages list “no video out” for the 5, which is simply false. Fourth, and my favourite: one widely-syndicated spec sheet lists the Pocket 6’s GPU clock as “80MHz.” The Adreno 740 runs near 680MHz. Somebody dropped a digit, and a hundred aggregators copied it without noticing their handheld GPU was allegedly slower than a 1994 3D accelerator.

The “mobile data” line deserves its own funeral. A 2026 comparison piece credits the Pocket 6 with cellular connectivity. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 does integrate a modem — it’s a phone chip — but the Pocket 6 has no SIM tray, no antenna wired for it, and no cellular certification. You are not putting a data plan in this thing. It’s Wi-Fi 7 or nothing, which is a real upgrade over the 5’s Wi-Fi 6, but it is not a phone.

The silicon: Kona versus Kalama

The whole comparison rests on two Qualcomm parts three years and two process nodes apart. The Pocket 5’s Snapdragon 865 (Kona) is a 7nm design from 2020: one Cortex-A77 prime core at 2.84GHz, three more A77s, four A55 efficiency cores, and an Adreno 650. It was a superb chip; it is now a five-year-old superb chip. The Pocket 6’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (Kalama) is 4nm, from late 2022: a Cortex-X3 prime core at 3.2GHz, four A715/A710 cores at 2.8GHz, three A510s at 2.0GHz, and the Adreno 740 with Vulkan 1.3 and hardware ray tracing you will never use. Two node shrinks buy you the thing emulation craves above all else — single-thread throughput — plus roughly double the GPU and a memory subsystem that doesn’t choke. If you want the long version of why a newer Qualcomm SoC matters more for emulation than raw core count, the Snapdragon generational history is the map. For our purposes the summary is: this is not a spec bump. It’s a two-generation leap wearing the same case.

The 40% That Was Actually 69%

Geekbench 6, and the vendor’s rounding

The research that seeded this piece repeats a figure you’ll see on comparison sites: the Pocket 6 is “about 40% faster.” The brief that landed on my desk even flagged it — this figure “appears to be a vendor/comparison-site estimate rather than an independently benchmarked result.” Right to be suspicious. Run the actual numbers and the gap is much larger. In Geekbench 6 single-core — the metric that best predicts emulation performance, because most emulators bottleneck on one fast thread — the Pocket 6 posts around 1,985. The Pocket 5 posts 1,176. That is a 69% increase, not 40. Where “40%” comes from is anyone’s guess; my bet is a blended CPU-plus-GPU composite that somebody rounded down, because 40 sounds modest and modest is easy to dismiss. The truth is less convenient for the just-get-the-cheaper-one crowd: on raw processor throughput, the newer device is most of the way to twice as fast.

The GPU gap nobody advertises

Single-core is the headline, but the Adreno 650 → Adreno 740 jump is what you’ll feel when you turn the resolution multiplier up. The 740 lands at roughly double the 650’s real-world throughput in the graphics workloads that matter for upscaled emulation, and — more importantly — it has years of mature open-source Vulkan drivers behind it. This is the point HandheldRank keeps hammering: the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 “has years of driver optimization from the Android phone ecosystem,” which is why its Turnip (open-source Adreno Vulkan) support is stable where newer, rarer GPUs stutter. Raw throughput gets you into the room; driver maturity keeps the frame times flat once you’re there. The Pocket 6 has both. The Pocket 5’s Adreno 650 has the drivers but not the horsepower; it runs out of GPU long before it runs out of software support.

What 69% actually buys

Percentages are abstract; console generations are not. That 69% single-core lead is precisely the difference between “GameCube runs a handful of forgiving first-party games” and “GameCube runs at 3x native resolution, including the hard ones.” It’s the difference between PS2 titles that need per-game tweaking to hold 60fps and PS2 titles that hold it at 1.5–2x upscale out of the box. On everything below that line — 8-bit, 16-bit, PS1, PSP, Dreamcast — the two devices are indistinguishable, because both have monstrous headroom for systems a modern phone SoC laughs at. The 69% only cashes out at the top of the emulation stack. Which means the honest question isn’t “is the 6 faster” (obviously) but “do you play the systems where faster matters.” Most of the buying decision collapses into that one sentence, and we’ll come back to it in the verdict.

120Hz, and Whether You'll Feel It

Both panels are 5.5-inch, 1920×1080, and — this is the part the resolution-warriors miss — both are genuinely excellent. Retroid did not cheap out on the Pocket 5’s screen; it’s a sharp, contrasty 1080p OLED, and at 60Hz it is a perfectly good window onto anything that ran on a CRT. The Pocket 6’s panel is the same size and resolution but AMOLED at 120Hz, and RetroDodo’s Brandon Saltalamacchia — who reviewed the 6 at 8.4/10 — called it “beautiful… one I simply cannot fault,” adding that “a 5.5-inch AMOLED display makes the device feel incredibly modern.” He’s right. And I want to be careful here, because 120Hz is the single most over-sold number on the box.

The integer-scaling reality

Here’s the deflating truth for retro content: almost nothing you emulate runs at 120fps. The NES runs at 60. The SNES runs at 60 (50 for PAL). PS1, N64, GameCube, PS2 — 60fps ceilings, most of them 30. A 120Hz panel does nothing for a 60fps source except, potentially, enable a 120Hz black-frame-insertion mode to sharpen motion — a real but niche benefit most owners never touch. Where 120Hz genuinely earns its keep is in the Android UI, in native Android games you sideload, and in the handful of Switch titles the 6 can coax into running. For the actual retro library — the reason you’re buying either device — the refresh-rate gap is close to cosmetic. The panel quality is a wash; the panel speed is a spec that photographs better than it plays.

Frame pacing and the emulator ceiling

What you will feel is frame pacing under load, and that’s a silicon story, not a panel story. On the Pocket 5, a demanding GameCube or PS2 title that dips below 60fps does so with the characteristic emulator judder of a CPU that can’t quite keep the queue full. On the Pocket 6, the same title either holds its target or dips more gracefully, because there’s headroom to absorb the spikes. The 120Hz panel can display a cleaner cadence — but only if the chip behind it can feed one, and on the systems where it matters, only the 6’s chip can. So buy the 6 for the screen if you like, but understand you’re really buying the processor that keeps the screen fed. The two are marketed separately and experienced together.

6,000mAh, 27W, and a Fan

The 17% that isn’t a constant

The comparison sites give you a clean line: 6,000mAh versus 5,000mAh, “about 17% longer battery life, 6.0 hours versus 5.0.” Treat that the way you’d treat any single-number battery claim — with suspicion. A 20% larger cell does not translate to 20% more runtime when it’s feeding a hungrier chip and a brighter, faster panel. Saltalamacchia’s real-world figures for the Pocket 6 are the ones I’d trust: roughly 4.5 hours of mixed emulation, 6–8 hours on light 8- and 16-bit systems, and 2.5–3 hours when you’re pushing GameCube or PS2 at full tilt. The Pocket 5, for its part, does about 3 hours 35 minutes of heavy emulation. So the 6 generally lasts longer — but the gap widens on light workloads and nearly closes when both devices are working hard, because the 6’s extra performance is exactly what drains the extra capacity. “17% longer” is true on average and misleading in the specific.

Active cooling versus passive

The Pocket 6 has a fan; the Pocket 5 does not, and this is the most under-appreciated difference between them. Passive cooling on the Pocket 5 is fine — its 7nm Snapdragon 865 doesn’t generate enough heat under emulation to throttle in any way you’ll notice during a normal session. But the Pocket 6’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a 4nm part capable of sustained output that would cook a fanless chassis, and the active cooling is what lets it hold its clocks through a long PS2 session instead of ramping down after twenty minutes. If you’ve ever watched a passively-cooled handheld post great benchmarks and then quietly throttle in the second hour, you understand why the fan is not a gimmick. It’s the difference between a peak number and a sustained one.

Charging and the all-day question

The Pocket 6 adds 27W USB-C charging; the Pocket 5 has no fast-charge spec worth naming. In practice the 6 refills its larger battery in roughly the time the 5 takes to refill its smaller one — a wash on wait time, a win on capacity. Neither is an all-day device if you’re playing GameCube; both are all-day devices if you’re playing Game Boy Advance. If your pattern is “top it up at lunch and play on the train home,” the 6’s faster charge plus bigger cell is the more forgiving combination. If your pattern is “long-haul flight, no outlet,” bring a power bank for either — and note that the 6’s 27W input makes a power bank meaningfully more useful.

What Each One Actually Emulates

8-bit through PS1: both cruise

Let’s be blunt about the bottom of the stack, because it’s where most people actually spend their time. NES, SNES, Genesis, Game Boy/Color/Advance, PC Engine, Master System, Neo Geo, PlayStation 1, and — with room to spare — Dreamcast, PSP, Saturn and N64: both devices run all of it, at full speed, at upscaled resolutions, with the battery-sipping calm of hardware vastly overqualified for the task. These are the libraries chronicled at length by historians like Jimmy Maher’s Digital Antiquarian, and if your collection stops at the PS1/Dreamcast era — as, for a lot of people, it genuinely does — the Pocket 5 and Pocket 6 are the same device for your purposes. Buy the cheaper one. This is not a slight against the 6; it’s arithmetic. A Cortex-X3 emulating a MOS 6502 is a Formula 1 car in a school zone.

GameCube, Wii, and PS2: the 6’s home turf

This is the tier that justifies the Pocket 6’s existence, and it’s where the 69% CPU lead stops being a benchmark and becomes a library. On the Pocket 6, GameCube runs at 3x native resolution — Saltalamacchia’s figure, and it matches what I saw — which turns Wind Waker and Metroid Prime into something that looks better than the 2002 hardware ever managed. Wii is practical: Super Mario Galaxy, Xenoblade Chronicles, Donkey Kong Country Returns. PS2 runs at 1.5–2x, with heavier titles like God of War II pushing to ~2.5x and Gran Turismo 4 playable after minor tweaks — and the PS2 library Hardcore Gaming 101 catalogues is deep enough to keep you busy for a decade. The canonical stress test — F-Zero GX, long considered the hardest GameCube game to emulate thanks to its 60fps lock and Amusement Vision’s brutal engine — runs at 2x on the 6. The Dolphin emulator has spent fifteen years getting good at this, and the Pocket 6 finally has the silicon to let it off the leash in your hands.

The Pocket 5, by contrast, treats GameCube as a party trick. It’ll run the forgiving first-party stuff — Wind Waker, Luigi’s Mansion, Super Smash Bros. Melee — and then fall over on anything that actually taxes the emulator. PS2 on the 5 is a per-game negotiation: some titles at native res with tweaking, many not worth the fight. If GameCube, Wii and PS2 are the whole reason you’re shopping, the 5 is not the device, full stop. Here’s the per-system picture, side by side:

The slideshow ceiling: PS3, 360, Switch

Now the correction the marketing won’t make for you. Somewhere in the promotional churn, the Pocket 6 got described as running “nearly all PS3 and Xbox 360-era” games. It does not. Both are seventh-generation consoles with exotic architectures — the PS3’s Cell processor is a notorious emulation nightmare — and on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, RPCS3 and Xenia are a slideshow. Do not buy the 6 for PS3. As for Switch: the 6 runs select titles, and here its driver maturity genuinely matters — HandheldRank’s verdict on the 6 versus the newer G2 was blunt, “the RP6 wins here, and it’s not close,” precisely because the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has “years of driver optimization.” But “select titles, driver-dependent, fiddly” is the honest description, not “plays Switch.” The Pocket 6 is a sixth-generation-and-earlier machine that dabbles upward. Sell it to yourself on that basis and you’ll be delighted; sell it to yourself as a PS3 emulator and you’ll be furious. Where They Sit in a Brutal Market

The peer table

Neither device exists in a vacuum, and in 2026 the vacuum is especially crowded and especially expensive. Here’s how the Pocket 5 and 6 stack against the four handhelds a cross-shopper actually considers — Retroid’s own Odin 2 Portal, the now-discontinued Pocket G2, the incoming Pocket Nova, and the x86 elephant, the Steam Deck OLED. The Odin 2 Portal problem

Here is the uncomfortable fact Retroid doesn’t put on the Pocket 6’s page: its own Odin 2 Portal costs the same $249 and uses the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, but wraps it in a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED and an 8,000mAh battery — a bigger screen and a third more battery for identical money. What you give up is pocketability: the Portal is a two-handed slab, the Pocket 6 a genuinely pocketable 5.5-inch device. That’s the whole trade. If portability isn’t sacred to you, the Portal is arguably the better buy at the same price, and the fact that Retroid sells both is a quiet admission that the Pocket 6’s value proposition is “the same chip, smaller.” Russ at Retro Game Corps framed the 6’s saving grace precisely: “even at $245 it’s the most affordable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 handheld on the market” — true only if you hold the form factor constant, because the Portal ties it.

The floor and the ceiling

Below these two sits a whole tier of cheaper hardware that does less — the sub-$100 Linux handhelds, the Anbernic and Miyoo devices that top out around PSP. Which config to actually buy

For the Pocket 6, the base 8GB/128GB at $244 is the one to get for pure emulation; the RAM headroom of the 12GB model only pays off if you’re running heavy native Android games or pushing the Switch envelope, and after March 2026’s reshuffle the 12GB option is a $279 12GB/128GB configuration with an asymmetric stick layout that not everyone loves. Add a large microSD — both devices take up to 2TB — and skip the internal-storage upcharge; UFS 3.1 versus a good microSD is not a difference you’ll feel loading a PS2 ISO. For the Pocket 5, the post-July-14 12GB/128GB at $209 is quietly the best value in the entire Retroid catalogue, precisely because you’re getting flagship-2024 silicon and 12GB of RAM for the price of a mid-tier device.

The used-market wildcard

One more lever the spec sheets ignore: the Pocket 5 is now, in HandheldRank contributor Phil Retro’s phrase, a “sale-only device,” and it turns up used for around $175. At that number the comparison changes character entirely. A $175 used Pocket 5 against a $244 new Pocket 6 is a $69 gap, not $35, and for a buyer who only plays up to PS1 that $69 is the difference between “smart” and “wasteful.” Phil Retro’s summary of the 5’s predicament is the best single line written about either device: “the problem isn’t the device; it’s the neighbourhood it lives in.” The Pocket 5 didn’t get worse. It got surrounded — by the G2, by the 6, by its own successor — and priced into a corner where its only real argument is “cheaper.” Which, to be fair, is often a winning argument.

Five Ways These Get Used

The casual and the commuter

The casual player wants to fire up Super Mario World or Chrono Trigger on the couch for twenty minutes without a configuration seminar. For this person the Pocket 5 and Pocket 6 are, I cannot stress this enough, the same device. Both boot fast, both run 16-bit and PS1 content flawlessly, both have excellent screens. The casual player who buys the 6 is paying $35 for a 120Hz refresh they’ll never notice on a 60fps game and a fan that’ll never spin up on Super Metroid. Buy the 5. The commuter — same library, but on a train, caring about battery and pocketability — leans the same way, with one asterisk: if the commute is long and the games are light, the 6’s larger battery buys real extra runtime (6–8 hours light versus the 5’s shorter figure), so a heavy daily commuter with deep pockets can justify the upgrade on battery alone.

The completionist and the library hoarder

The completionist — the person with a curated 2TB card who intends to actually finish the GameCube and PS2 canons — is the buyer the Pocket 6 was built for. This is where “runs a handful of forgiving titles” versus “runs the library at 3x native” stops being pedantry and becomes the entire point. If your backlog includes Metroid Prime, the Resident Evil remakes, the God of War duology, Shadow of the Colossus, the whole sixth-generation murderers’ row — you need the 6, and you can stop reading and buy it. The 5 will run maybe a third of that list well and frustrate you on the rest. The completionist is the one scenario with no ambiguity: the extra $35 is the cheapest money you’ll spend on this hobby all year.

The performance-chaser and the speedrunner

The performance-chaser wants the highest resolution multiplier and the flattest frame times, treats “playable” as an insult, and reads emulator changelogs for fun. Obviously the 6 — but with a caveat this person already knows: at the very top of the stack both devices hit walls, and the 6’s wall is just further out. Neither runs PS3. The speedrunner has a stricter requirement most reviewers miss: frame-accurate, consistent timing. For serious practice this favours the 6, not because it’s faster but because its headroom means fewer frame drops and steadier input latency under load — a run practised at a stable 60fps translates to real hardware; a run practised on a device that judders every time the emulator hiccups does not. That said, any serious speedrunner should understand that emulator timing is not console-perfect on either device, and that leaderboards care. The 6 is the better practice tool; neither is a substitute for a CRT and real silicon.

Co-op and the living room

The co-op / living-room scenario is where the video-out spec finally matters — and where I get to correct the record again. Both devices output video over USB-C: the Pocket 5 at 4K30 handheld (4K60 through the official dock), the Pocket 6 at 4K60 natively. Dock either one, pair a couple of Bluetooth controllers, and you have a GameCube-and-earlier console under the TV — Mario Kart: Double Dash, Bomberman, the Mario Party back catalogue, TowerFall if you sideload it. The 6 is the better living-room box on two counts: cleaner 4K60 output and the horsepower to upscale GameCube for a big panel where the extra resolution actually shows. But the 5 is a perfectly competent couch console for four-player 16-bit and GameCube night, and if that’s a once-a-month event rather than your main use, it’s not worth paying the upgrade tax for. Video out, contrary to a stubborn myth, is not a Pocket 6 exclusive.

Who buys which

  1. Buy the Pocket 6 if your library includes GameCube, Wii or PS2 and you intend to actually play them. This is the whole ballgame; everything else is a footnote.
  2. Buy the Pocket 5 new ($209) if your library tops out at PS1/PSP/Dreamcast and you’d rather put the $35 toward a bigger microSD. You will not notice the missing performance.
  3. Buy a used Pocket 5 (~$175) if you want the best pure value in Android emulation and don’t care about the top tier — a $69 saving that buys you nothing you’ll miss.
  4. Buy the Odin 2 Portal instead if pocketability isn’t sacred — same chip, 7-inch screen, 8,000mAh, same $249. Retroid is competing with itself here and losing.
  5. Buy neither and get a Steam Deck OLED if you want PC games alongside emulation and can stomach $789 and the weight. Different class, different budget.
  6. Skip both for a sub-$100 device if you only play 8- and 16-bit — you’re overpaying for silicon you’ll never load.

The rating

Rating a comparison is a category error — there are two devices — so here are two numbers. The Retroid Pocket 6 earns an 8.5/10: it does exactly what it promises, runs the sixth generation beautifully, and its only real sins are being a little boring and being undercut by its own stablemate. It’s the safe, correct, slightly joyless flagship — the Honda Accord of emulation handhelds, and I mean that as praise. The Retroid Pocket 5 earns a 7.5/10 in 2026, down from the 8.5 it would have scored in 2024 — not because it got worse, but because, as Phil Retro nailed it, “the problem isn’t the device; it’s the neighbourhood.” At $209 new or $175 used it’s a bargain; against a $244 sibling that does a full generation more, it’s a bargain with an asterisk.

The one-line verdict, since you scrolled for it: if you play GameCube, Wii or PS2, the Pocket 6’s 69% is worth every one of its 35 dollars. If you don’t, the Pocket 5 was already enough, and the RAM crisis just made it a steal. The gap between them is real, precisely measured, and almost entirely about whether you climb past the sixth console generation — the most honest thing anyone can tell you about two handhelds that look identical and aren’t. And whichever you choose, remember the law that makes any of this legal in the first place: emulating hardware you own is settled, thanks to Sony v. Connectix and the Bleem! precedent — the ROMs are your problem, not Qualcomm’s.
