The Pocket 5 was that device in 2025: a Snapdragon 865 wrapped in an aluminium shell, a 1080p AMOLED panel, and a price that started at $199. It was, by the reckoning of most people who actually held one, the point at which Android retro handhelds stopped being a compromise and started being the default. Then Retroid revealed the Pocket 6, and the argument reset.

The Pocket 6 is not a reinvention. It is a Pocket 5 with the parts nudged forward one generation and the fan actually spinning. The chip is newer, the screen refreshes twice as fast, the battery is bigger, the sticks and triggers got upgraded, and the wireless stack jumped to Wi-Fi 7. None of that is revolutionary in isolation. Taken together it is a genuinely better handheld. The only question that matters, and the only one this review is really about, is whether it is $35 better. Because that, give or take shipping and a RAM shortage, is the gap between the two in the middle of 2026.

The two-year itch

To understand why the Pocket 6 exists at all, you have to understand the ladder it sits on. It is also a list of refinements, not revelations, and the honest reviewer's job is to work out which of those refinements you will actually feel with a controller in your hands and a ROM you legally dumped yourself.

The thesis

Here is where The Machine's cards go on the table, up front, because a review that hides its verdict until the last paragraph is a review that does not trust its own argument. The Pocket 6 is the better device. The Pocket 5 is the better buy for most people. Both do it anyway, which tells you something about how much performance the smartphone arms race left lying on the table for the retro-handheld world to scavenge.

Two flagships, three years apart

The Snapdragon 865 was Qualcomm's flagship for the 2020 phone cycle. It powered the Galaxy S20 generation and a long tail of Android flagships, and when it launched the commentary of the day treated it as the chip that finally made 5G-era Android phones genuinely fast. It pairs with the Adreno 650, a GPU that aged extraordinarily well precisely because so many of the games worth emulating predate it by a decade or more. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 arrived for the 2023 phone cycle, powering the Galaxy S23 line among others, with the Adreno 740. Where the 8 Gen 2 pulls ahead

Cons: digital rather than analog shoulder triggers, a real loss for racing and GameCube libraries; 60Hz panel means a slightly less silky UI and marginally more motion persistence; the demanding end of PS2/GameCube upscaling is where it finally shows its age; LPDDR4x rather than LPDDR5x, which matters at the margins.

Two ratings, because this is two devices, and a single score would lie about both. The Machine's opinions are named, owned, and open to your disagreement.

The Pocket 6

The Pocket 6 is the better handheld and the more forgettable purchase, which is a strange thing to be and exactly what Retrododo meant by "Perfect, Yet Slightly Dull Android." Everything it does, it does a notch better than the Pocket 5: faster chip, smoother screen, analog triggers, active cooling, bigger battery, better wireless. None of it is a revelation, because the Pocket 5 already cleared the bar that matters for most libraries, and the 8 Gen 2 spends its advantage in a tier, demanding PS2/GameCube upscaling and selective Switch, that most owners will visit occasionally at best. At roughly $244 it is fairly priced for what it is and, in a 2026 memory market that keeps nudging costs upward, arguably good value that Retroid has resisted inflating further. It earns a strong score with a clear caveat about who it is for. The Pocket 6: 8 out of 10. A better device that struggles to justify itself to anyone who already owns its predecessor.

The Pocket 5

The Pocket 5 is the one The Machine would hand a friend without a second thought, because it does 90% of what the Pocket 6 does for less money, and that 90% is the part of the emulation ladder where almost everyone actually lives. The 865 refuses to age gracefully into obsolescence; it just keeps running everything up to the GameCube tier as if it were built for the job. Its losses to the 6, digital triggers and a 60Hz panel, are real but narrow, and its price advantage is the exact $35 this whole review has been circling. For the buyer who is not chasing the ceiling, it is the smarter machine. The Pocket 5: 8.5 out of 10. Not because it is more capable than the 6, it is not, but because it is more sensible, and sense is what a value verdict is supposed to reward.

The $35 answer

So: is the 8 Gen 2 worth a $35 premium? If you are buying your first premium Android handheld and you care about the sharpest possible PS2 and GameCube, or you play games that need analog triggers, yes, pay it and buy the Pocket 6, ideally the 12GB configuration for the demanding work. If you are anyone else, and "anyone else" is most people, the Pocket 5 gives you the same experience across the games you will actually spend your hours on, and it does it for less. And if you already own a Pocket 5, close this tab, keep your money, and go dump a cartridge you legally own. The best handheld is very often the one already in your hands, which is the least profitable sentence a hardware review can end on, and the truest.

Is the Retroid Pocket 6 worth $35 more than the Pocket 5?
Only if you chase the top of the emulation ceiling. The 8 Gen 2 and Adreno 740 pull ahead in demanding PS2/GameCube upscaling and selective Switch titles, and the analog L2/R2 triggers unlock racing and GameCube games the Pocket 5 can only approximate. For the 8-bit-through-Dreamcast-and-PSP majority, the Pocket 5's Snapdragon 865 gives an identical experience for roughly $35 less.
What can the Pocket 5's Snapdragon 865 actually emulate?
Everything from NES up through PSP, Dreamcast, and most of the PlayStation 2, GameCube and Wii libraries runs at full or near-full speed. Saturn and Switch are selective, and PS3/Wii U are mostly out of reach. The 865 (paired with the Adreno 650) was a 2020 phone flagship and remains overkill for the retro catalogue most people replay.
Does the Pocket 6's 120Hz screen matter for retro games?
Rarely. Almost every classic game was authored for 60Hz or 50Hz, so a 120Hz panel does not make that content smoother, it just holds each frame less time, slightly cleaning up motion persistence. The 120Hz is a genuine benefit for the Android UI and native games, but for the retro library that justifies these devices it is a luxury, not a fix.
How much is the Pocket 6 and when did it ship?
Retroid's official page lists $244, with launch pricing of $229 for 8GB/128GB and $279 for 12GB/256GB per Notebookcheck (Oct 27 2025); Android Authority reported the 12GB model returned in June 2026 at $279 with only 128GB. Notebookcheck also said preorders would not dispatch until January 2026 at the earliest, so both units ship freely by mid-2026.
Do the Retroid Pocket 5 or 6 come with games?
No, and that is deliberate. Both ship empty because emulating hardware is legal but downloading ROMs of games you do not own is copyright infringement. The defensible route is dumping cartridges and discs you actually own; treat any listing advertising thousands of pre-loaded games the same way you would a Miyoo clone claiming 25,000 titles.
